Dave and Tommy take time out this month to offer a tribute to their old friend Terry Trabandt who passed away earlier this year. Terry was an accomplished musician and songwriter who is best known for co-writing several classic songs with Joe Walsh including Turn To Stone, County Fair and Time Out.
Dave's recollection: "Terry was from Ann Arbor, our home town and he went to the same elementary school as I did. He played guitar in the school talent show way before the rest of us were really getting into music. Years later, his band and my band both played in our high school's Senior Talent Show. He played in a number of Detroit area bands including a group named Guardian Angel with Al Jacquez. Terry was a great guy - and his bass playing was unique and very good."
Tommy adds: "I was younger than Terry and always admired his bass playing. I would see his group the Rationals on local TV broadcast from Detroit and for a local band to be on TV was a really big deal. I first met Terry at the local Musician's Union office. We struck up a conversation and he asked if I knew of any good bass players - as he was putting together a band for a solo project he was working on. The project consisted of all original music by Terry and he was playing guitar and doing vocals. I told him that I had my own band and that I played bass. He asked if I would be interested in playing with him and I said yes. One week later, I joined Terry in a rehearsal room with a drummer named Frank who had just returned from touring with Deodato and we learned several of Terry's new songs. Three weeks later we did our first gig at an outdoor concert in the Detroit area. Terry was a very nice guy and such a musical talent!"
