Tommy Miller discusses the new CD and how events of the past two years have impacted the band.
How is work on the new CD progressing? "We have been continuing to write new songs which makes it harder to stop and choose the songs for the new CD. At this point, we have once again narrowed it down to a short list of songs that we're refining in the lab."
Do you have specific criteria that you use to choose songs for the CD? "All of us as songwriters have a lot of freedom to write what we want. We each have our own studios and that's where a lot of the early work takes place. Sometimes we get together in the studio to work, sometimes we work independently. Let's say I have a strong sketch of a song - when I'm ready, I send it to Dave and Mark and then we start to kick it around in the lab. Guitar and keyboard parts may be added and we always look to Dave for those signature harp parts. We beat up the melody and lyrics and Mark works a lot on the sound. Mark is the keeper of the Miller Bros. Band sound."
Can you share any more information about the songs on the new CD? We wanted the new CD to be a natural evolution from the songs on Tales From Foundry Town. I think we are achieving that - and I have to say that the new songs have a bit more of a rock feel to them, although they still have the blues flavorings that we all love. One new song Still Love Her So comes to mind...it has a great rhythm guitar part and Dave's harp part cuts to the quick. Not sure what Dave had for lunch that day, but his harp playing was truly inspired! That song is a contrast to another song called Midnight that has a darker feel to it."
What is Midnight about? The song is about a guy who boot legs stolen goods for a living and some of the difficulties he experiences during a day on the job. Its a rough life. The tune started with a somewhat desperate bass line that I came up with and we built the rest of the song around that.
When will the new CD be coming out? We now expect it to be out late this year. We're working on finalizing all of the songs and conversations have started about CD title, artwork and all of those details.
Part 2 of this interview will be shared next week.
